Where do great design ideas come from?

Shaun Westgate, Creative Director

Clearly good ideas come out of creative people, but their brains need lots of stimulation.
When I first started art college our design lecturer encouraged us to always have a scrap
book and sketch book to record and collect ideas, images, things that inspired us.

At the time this seemed to me to be a waste of time, but I reluctantly went along with it.
What became very clear to me was this was good practice. When I had a brief that
required some original thinking, I always had lots of interesting visual reference to call upon
which really helped make my ideas richer and more original.

To this day I continue to sketch and use a scrap book, I'm sure this is a practice
that I will continue to do for the rest of my life – it has always helped me in solving a diverse
set of creative problems. I would encourage any creative person to do the same, it's
tried and tested and it really does work.
